Been waiting for this since last year. Oho how I have been looking forward to this. Once again I have picked 31 random beers, some I reconnise the brewery but most of them are completely new to me. Will also admit to making sure I didnt get any bottles with the word Gueuze anywhere near it, had a real nasty experience with some gueuze beers last year, at least I think I did… oh my. Might be willing to retry another day another time though.
I do think that my sense of smell and taste will not be as good as they can be yet. I’ll need some time to really get back into the groove and be able to describe my thoughts on these, hopefully, delicious beers.
Without any more delay. Here we have the first bottle, a strong little beast of a stout standing at 9.1% called Storm king by Victory brewery.
First things first, not to quote Agent Smith but ‘It’s the smell!’ Straight away a really typical stout aroma followed by a pleasant coffee bean smell, not coffee, with something roasted came to mind, malt maybe.
The intially taste is much more bitter than I expected but I was sure that I would get used to that. Once the bitterness subsides your left with a warmth, did not expect that from this drink. It is also quite malty while drinking, with something quite exotic appearing when the glass leaves your lips. The texture is quite oily, really coating the mouth which lingers just enough. I also thought it would be heavier but was pleasantly surprised, its just nice.
Overall I think this beer is a bit more complex than I first gave it credit for. A very pleasant suprise. I cant see myself desperately hunting down another, was nice but nothing that made me crave another, and yet Im enjoying thinking about what else it has going on. An interesting first bottle then.
